Times Cited Count:4 Percentile:68.71(Chemistry, Analytical)We studied the successive formation of water soluble DGA (diglycolamide) and DOODA (dioxaoctanediamide) for the mutual separation of Ln in this extraction system. TODGA (tetraoctyl-diglycolamide) and DOODA(C8) (tetraoctyl-dioxaoctanediamide) have the opposite trend to extract light and heavy Ln through Ln-patterns. Metal-complexes of two folding Ln ions with water-soluble DOODA and three folding with DGA are found and their observed formation constants are calculated. The suitable separation condition (aqueous phase: 30 mM DOODA(C2) in 1 M nitric acid, organic phase: 0.1 M TODGA in n-dodecane) of multi-stage extraction (10 10) is conducted. From the present work, it is clear that La, Pr and Nd are mainly present in aqueous phase, instead Sm-Dy exist in the organic phase.

Hexaalkyl-nitrilotriacetamide (NTAamide) was evaluated for the separation of MA(III) and RE(III). NTAamide is a tetradentate ligand with one soft central N-donor atom and three hard carbonyl O-donor atoms in its skeleton. NTAamide was tested for the removal of MA(III) and RE(III) from HNO into n-dodecane. MA(III) and RE(III) separation was demonstrated with a high yield through the extraction process using NTAamide. This study shows that NTAamide is a highly practical, high-performance extractant for partitioning MA(III) from RE(III).

We focus on the development of simply mutual separation method of trivalent lanthanide (Ln) and actinides (An). The extraction system using extractant and masking agent in both aqueous and organic phases may change the lanthanide pattern greatly, which leads the high separation factor not only Ln and An but also Am and Cm. In this presentation, the results obtained by several extraction system will be discussed.

The mutual separation of lanthanide is difficult because the chemical behavior of lanthanides is very analogous. Thus, the task to develop the mutual separation method among lanthanide is important. Here, we examined to separate lanthanides using batch-wise multi-stage extraction with TDDGA. The batch-wise multi-stage extraction can be evaluated based on the plate-theory of chromatography, thus we investigated the basic results of batch-wise multi-stage extractions.

In order to enlarge the separation factors between trivalent actinide (An) and lanthanide (Ln), which show similar chemical behavior, the use of water-soluble ligand has been studied. In this work, ten of amides and carboxylic acids are employed in TODGA extraction system and their properties are compared. It is noted that complexing ability of amide with Ln is higher than that with carboxylic acid under pH 2, if both reagents have the same central frame. Classifying 14 lanthanides into four groups (La-Nd, Sm-Gd, Gd-Ho, and Er-Lu), the difference of their complexing reactions in each group and the reaction of An will be discussed.

Am and Cm as minor actinides, have the similar chemical behavior, thus both metals are, in general, hard to separate. On the other hand, separation of Am with long-lived radionuclide to transmute from Cm to emit neutrons by spontaneous fission has been requesting. Although the mutual separation by solvent extraction is a tough work, ADAAM (Alkyl DiAmide AMine) developed in JAEA show high separation factor of Am/Cm of around 6 at HNO-n-dodecane system. We focus on basic research on solvent extraction using ADAAM and investigate the physical properties, i.e., polarity and viscosity, and separation factors of Am/Cm variated in combination with water-soluble masking agent of An, and will show the information at the meeting.

ADAAM, which is a tridentate diamide including tertiary N atom and developed by JAEA, shows very high separation factor (SF=6) of Am/Cm in nitric acid-n-dodecane system. We tried to enlarge SF using masking agents, however, it is not successful up to now. Thus, the batchwise multi-stage extraction using solo ADAAM for Am/Cm separation is performed. One of the advantages for this technique is available to use small volumes of organic and aqueous phases. Calculation gives product of more than 95% Am with less than 5% Cm by 12 stages of solvent extraction. On the other hand, because of relatively low SF, volume of the raffinate solution may increase several times after multi-stage extraction. In this presentation, we discuss how to cut down their volumes.

Using TODGA and ADAAM, which are developed by JAEA, the recovery of total amounts of An and Ln, and mutual separation of Am/Cm have been achieved. Recent studies give the very high SF(An/Ln) over 100 and show the different chemical behavior between An and Ln, using solvent extraction of tri, tetradentate extractant and masking agent. We confirm these conditions to satisfy the subsequent ones, to maintain the suitable concentrations of extractants and masking agents for Ln recovery, and to show high SF using sets of D values over and under 1. In the presentation, we will show the difficulties of An/Ln separation and direction of researches, and present the SF(An/Ln) using various extractants and masking agents.

DTBA, developed by JAEA, shows the comparatively high solubility in water, affinity with Ln and An, thus applicable in industrial use. DTBA have relatively high SF(= An/Ln, 8.3) in TODGA extraction system, by DTBA employment An can be separated from Ln through back-extraction from TODGA phase. Here, Ln contents in high-level radioactive waste are several ten times higher than An, it requests higher SF in order to achieve the satisfied separation. In this work, we investigate carefully to obtain higher SF under TODGA-DTBA system. In addition, based on Ln and An having high coordination numbers, we study the possibility of the synergistic back-extraction using DTBA and another masking agent, in order to obtain high SF(An/Ln).
